The Owners Box
Blue’s News Staff met up with the Blues owner Charlie Turner this week for a sit down about this upcoming season.
Bob Hayes: Mr. Turner, what are your expectations for this upcoming season?
Charlie Turner: I know we aren’t a Championship caliber team quite yet, but with the talent in the minors, the abilities of the teams head scout, Fernando Arenillas, and the determination of my GM we have a very bright future.
Bob Hayes: I have received a lot of comments regarding the 3 large banners hanging outside on the stadium by the Main Entrance; can you explain these to your fans?
Charlie Turner: Absolutely Bob, At Spring Training, I watched my team during conditioning, practice, and games. I wasn’t just looking for the team superstar to put up on the walls, but a true leader. I wanted someone that can lead this team through actions and words. It wasn’t very difficult to come up with these three players. They are our third baseman Juan Melendez, Our very talented shortstop, Cal Ripken Jr. and our opening day starter Jack Morris. These three men have clout in the locker room. If they want to speak, the guys quiet down and listen.
Bob Hayes: All three are great choices. Is there anything else you would like to say to the Die Hard Blues Fans?
Charlie Turner: Capital City Blues Fans, be ready for a great year. Our Blues players will be involved throughout the year with the community. Dates will come up at the stadium that will allow fans of all ages to interact and get to know each and every one of them. Don’t hesitate to come down the ball park.
Bob Hayes: Thank you Mr. Turner and I look forward to talking to you throughout the season.
The General Managers Notes
As we are in the beginning days of the season, I continue to look for ways to better the ball club. Due to an injury in Spring Training to George Wright, I was forced to go out and find another Centerfielder. I contacted a few teams regarding players but could not come to terms with anyone specific. While down at spring training, an old college roommate of mine came down to check out the facility, meet the players, and give me some tips about transforming from a ball player to a general manager. Over dinner, he told me that he recently had some drinks with a friend of his, who was currently a free agent in the ULB. He told me about 33 year old Mickey Rivers. I immediately pulled up as much information about Rivers that I could. I was informed that Mickey was living in Miami with his family and would be open to meeting at our facility. I had Fernando do some scouting on him and came back with less than desirable information. He informed me that he could be a liability defensively and typically can only hit for contact. My roommate said that Mickey is great in the clubhouse and if coached by the right guy could perform when needed. At camp, Mickey showed what he had. It wasn’t beautiful, but it was good enough to fill in the void of George Wright. After that he would be moved to a back up role. Mickey expressed no interest in signing a minor league deal so we inked a 1 year $200,000 contract. Mickey arrived at camp ready to move. Looking at our current team, Mickey has produced enough to make the starting line-up. He is playing at DH. At the 13 game mark, Mickey has a BA of .362, OBP of .375, 2 doubles, a homerun, and a stolen base. It is early but if he could stay close to these numbers he will be a steal and earn himself a better deal.
Blues Scouting Report
The Blues recently sent scouts down to Texas to watch Oil Can Boyd pitch. He was on their radar during the draft. The Blues were just a few picks off from acquiring him. Before the reports made it to GM Westover’s desk, he was dealt to the New York Empire. The Blues are hoping to be able to speak to the Empire about the availability of Boyd. It is rumored that Westover briefly contact San Francisco last week regarding a trade. Neither side was able to sit down quiet yet to work on anything.
Rumor Mill
Rumors around the clubhouse are that the Blues GM is looking to make a few moves to change the face of the Major League Club. They are looking to add an everyday right fielder and a 4th and 5th starter. The word is that such names as Bucky Dent, Broderick Perkins, Juan Bonilla, Wally Bachman, and Rollie Fingers could be moved before the All Star Break.
